Acrylonitrile gives ABS resin chemical stability, oil resistance, certain rigidity and hardness; Butadiene improves its toughness, impact and cold resistance; Styrene makes it have good dielectric properties and gloss, and show good processing characteristics. The melting temperature of ABS resin is 190~240 deg C, thermal decomposition temperature> 250 deg C. The product has good dimensional stability, molding shrinkage is small. Has excellent comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, non-toxic, odorless, heat resistance, impact resistance, especially good low temperature impact; Electrical properties, wear resistance, chemical stability; Water resistance, inorganic salts, alkali and acids; insoluble in most alcohols and hydrocarbon solvents, and soluble in aldehydes, ketones, esters and some chlorinated hydrocarbons; Poor weather resistance, flammable, low heat distortion temperature.

There are many industrial production methods for BS resin. At present, the most widely used in the world is still the emulsion method, which can be divided into two categories: emulsion grafting and emulsion grafting blending. The bulk suspension method still has some practical value. This is briefly described as follows.

  1. the floating liquid grafting method of butadiene (or styrene) in the polymerization kettle, the synthesis of fatty acid potassium soap as emulsifier, organic peroxide as initiator, polybutadiene or styrene-butadiene latex was prepared by emulsion polymerization at 5-20 °c. A certain amount of latex is added to the graft polymerization reactor in the required ratio of styrene, acrylonitrile, emulsifier, initiator (potassium persulfate) and regulator (tertiary mercaptan), the graft polymer latex was obtained by emulsion graft copolymerization at 60-90 ℃ for 6H. The antioxidant is added to the latex, and the ABS resin product is obtained by separating, washing, drying and granulating with salt water or sulfuric acid in the coagulation tank.
  2. emulsion grafting blending method the PB latex prepared by emulsion grafting method is blended with AS latex prepared from styrene and acrylonitrile, and then washed with condensed water, centrifuged, dried, ABS resin products were obtained by granulation. ABS powder prepared by emulsion graft copolymerization of polybutadiene latex, ABS resin product prepared by blending AS pellets and various additives by suspension polymerization, foreign industrial production is often used in the method.
  3. Bulk-suspension method polybutadiene (or styrene-butadiene) rubber is first dissolved in styrene and acrylonitrile monomers, and bulk prepolymerization is carried out. When the polymerization conversion rate reaches 20% ~ 40% and the phase transition occurs, it is transferred to a water-containing suspension polymerization kettle for suspension polymerization. After the polymerization reaction is finished, the product is obtained by centrifugal dehydration, washing and drying.
  4. According to the characteristics of the three monomers in ABS, by adjusting the proportion of each monomer, molecular weight, adding additives, can produce a variety of ABS brands to meet the requirements of different customers. Theoretically, the composition of ABS can vary indefinitely, but is usually in the range of A/B/S = (20 to 30)/(5 to 40)/(40 to 70). For example, by controlling the content (lower), particle size (smaller), AN content and molecular weight (lower) of the rubber phase in ABS, high gloss ABS can be obtained; Increase the rubber content, cold resistant, high impact ABS can be prepared; Improve the melt strength (molecular weight), can be prepared blow molding grade ABS.

ABS resin is an amorphous polymer with good processability. Not only can be used in injection molding, extrusion, calendering, blow molding, vacuum and foaming and other general molding processing methods, can also be used in cold molding processing. But not applicable to compression and transfer molding
Processing, also should not use hot melt method or casting method. Because of the small hygroscopicity of ABS resin, it can be used for molding processing without drying under normal circumstances, and the surface gloss of the product is better if it is processed after drying. During injection molding, the material temperature is controlled at 200~240 ℃, the injection pressure is 50 ~ lOOMPa, and the mold temperature is 40~80 ℃. The molded article can be annealed at 70 °c for 2-4H in an infrared lamp or a blast oven to remove internal stress. During extrusion molding, the temperature of the front part of the cylinder is 170~180 ℃, the temperature of the middle part is 180~220 ℃, the temperature of the head is 180~220 ℃, the temperature of the die is 180~210 ℃, and the ratio of the length to diameter of the screw is 18~20, the compression ratio was 2.5 to 3.0.
ABS plastic can be welded by flame and ABS electrode, or bonded with 10% ABS methyl ethyl ketone solution, and can also be used for drilling, sawing, cutting, turning, milling and other mechanical secondary processing. The surface of the parts is very easy to be plated and printed.
