The p-hydroxyacetophenone is chloromethylated with formaldehyde and concentrated hydrochloric acid to generate 3-chloromethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone, and then esterified with acetic anhydride to obtain 3-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone diacetate, the latter is brominated with bromine to obtain the product.
