4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)Piperazine-1-Ethanesulfonic Acid Hemisodium Salt - Introduction
4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid hemi-sodium salt (HEPES) is an organic acid salt compound. Its chemical formula is C8H18N2O4S and its molecular weight is 238.3g/mol. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder.
HEPES has many important properties and applications. First, it is a buffer. Because of its good buffering capacity, it can stabilize the pH value of cell culture solution, reaction solution and biochemical experimental system in the physiological pH range. Its buffer range is between pH 6.8-8.2. Because of its good buffer capacity and non-toxic to organisms, it is widely used in biomedical research and cell culture.
Secondly, HEPES can also be used as an electrophoresis buffer, especially for protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis experiments. It can effectively maintain the pH stability of the electrophoresis deposition gel, making the electrophoresis results more accurate and reliable.
HEPES is generally prepared by reacting 1,3-dichloropropane and ethyl methyl sulfate, and then from 2-hydroxyethyl -1-piperazine. Finally, the resulting product was reacted with anhydrous sodium carbonate to give the hemi-sodium salt of HEPES.
When using HEPES, please pay attention to the following safety information: HEPES is low toxic, but you should avoid inhaling dust and contact with skin and eyes. Workplaces should be well ventilated and suitable personal protective measures such as gloves, glasses and masks should be taken. In case of inadvertent contact, rinse the affected area immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention immediately.
