Physical and Chemical Properties | The appearance of barium iodide is colorless orthorhombic crystal or white granular crystal; Soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in alcohol. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline. One crystal water is lost when heated to 98.9 °c, two crystal water are lost at 539 °c, and decomposition occurs when heated to 740 °c. It rapidly turns red in the air due to the release of iodine. Barium iodide is commonly used in the manufacture of other iodides. |
Use | For the manufacture of other iodides |
Introduction | Barium iodide (English: Barium iodide) is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula BaI2, which is a white solid. There are two types, one is hydrate and the other is anhydrous, both of which are white solids. Anhydrous can be obtained by heating water-containing barium iodide. |
reaction | anhydrous barium iodide can be formed by the reaction of metal barium and 1, 2-diiodoethane in ether. BaI2 will react with potassium alkyl to form organic barium compounds. BaI2 can be reduced by biphenyl lithium to form highly active barium metal. |
use | barium iodide can be used in the preparation of medicine and other iodides. |

Preparation method | 1. A production method of barium iodide dihydrate, which sequentially includes the following steps:(1) The synthesis step of ferrous iodide: The iodine and iron powder are added to the container with water according to the molar ratio of iodine: iron powder = 1.0: 1.2-1.5, the weight of the water in the container is 2-3 times the weight of iodine, and the reaction is 30-50 minutes at a temperature of 40-60 degrees C and a stirring speed of 60-100 r/min, and the free iodine and IO3-qualified iron iodide solution is prepared;(2) the synthesis steps of barium iodide: the synthesized ferrous iodide solution is added to the barium hydroxide solution under stirring conditions according to the molar ratio of ferrous iodide to barium hydroxide = 1: 1 to carry out neutralization reaction to generate Fe(OH)2 precipitate and BaI2 solution, boil the reaction solution for 20 minutes, and adjust the PH value to 8.5-9 with barium hydroxide;(3) Filtration, concentration, crystallization, and drying steps: add activated carbon to the reaction solution according to 2-5% of the weight of iodine, adsorb and remove Fe(OH)2 precipitation, organic impurities and mechanical impurities to obtain a transparent barium iodide solution, and then evaporate the barium iodide solution at normal temperature and pressure until barium iodide crystallizes and precipitates, then centrifuges and dehydrates the crystalline barium iodide, and dries at 75-90 ℃ for 60-90 minutes to obtain BaI2 · 2H2O with barium iodide content ≥ 99%. 2. Anhydrous barium iodide can be prepared in pyridine solution with barium hydride and ammonium iodide. After most of the pyridine is removed by distillation, the crystalline pyridine is removed by vacuum distillation at 150~160 ℃, and the yield is 97%. |
