Physical and Chemical Properties | Physicochemical properties Chloric acid chemical formula HClO3, the oxyacid of chlorine, in which chlorine is positive pentavalent. It only exists in the solution. The solution is light yellow, has a pungent smell, has a 1.282 specific gravity, and is unstable. When heated to 40°C, it will decompose and explode. When it is concentrated at low pressure, it will decompose, release chlorine and oxygen and form perchloric acid. It is strong oxidizing and acidic, and it reacts explosively in contact with organic matter. It is obtained by reacting barium chlorate with dilute sulfuric acid, filtering out barium sulfate precipitation. Mainly used as a strong oxidant. |
Risk Codes | R8 - Contact with combustible material may cause fire R34 - Causes burns |
Safety Description | S17 - Keep away from combustible material. S26 - In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. S36/37/39 - Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection. S45 - In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible.) |

production method
preparation method Ba(ClO 3 ) 2 H 2 SO 4 = 2HClO 3 BaSO 4
Dissolve 322g Ba(ClO 3 ) 2 in 500mL boiling water. 98g(53.3mL) of concentrated H 2 SO 4 (relative density 1.84) was mixed with 53.3mL of water. The hot sulfuric acid solution is slowly added to the barium chlorate solution under stirring. Pay attention to the remaining barium chlorate rather than excessive sulfuric acid. Let BaSO 4 precipitate for at least 1h. Pour the clarified liquid out 2/3, and the rest is pumped and filtered with a Brinell funnel. The filtrate was combined with the poured solution to obtain 660mL of HClO 3 (relative density 1.11) of about 22%. This solution is concentrated in a vacuum dryer with concentrated sulfuric acid to obtain about 40% HClO 3 solution. The composition of this solution is equivalent to chloric acid heptahydrate. Density 1.282 g/cm 3.
