Introduction
Dimethylphosphine oxide is an organophosphorus compound. It is a colorless liquid, soluble in polar organic solvents. It exists as a phosphine oxide, not a hydroxy tautomer. The related compound is diphenylphosphine oxide. Both are sometimes called secondary phosphine oxides.
Preparation
This compound is produced by the hydrolysis of chloromethylphosphine:
Me2PCl H2O→Me2P(O)H HCl
It is also possible to use methanol instead of ethanol instead of water. The by-product is methyl chloride.
