Use | Ammonium phthalate is an organic intermediate, which can be obtained by the reaction of phthalic acid and ammonia, and can be used to prepare phthalimide. Phthalimide and its derivatives are important intermediates in synthetic organic chemistry. For example, in the preparation of bioactive compounds (I. e., antibacterial agents, analgesics, antifungal agents, plant growth regulators) and also have important uses in the fuel industry. |
Preparation | Step 1: Acid hydrolysis to phthalic acid 318g of water was added to a 2-liter multi-neck flask equipped with a stirrer and thermometer and heated to 95°C. At this temperature, 1.524g of disodium phthalate water (19.6%) and 301,8g of sulfuric acid were added to the flask at the same time within 1 hour. The mixture was then stirred at 95°C for 1 hour and then cooled to 20°C. The phthalic acid was crystallized and vacuumized at 20°C with a suction filter. Phthalic acid was then washed with 215g of water. Step 2: Phthalic acid to ammonium phthalate In the suction filter, the newly washed phthalic acid and 89g of water are mixed under stirring to form a uniform mixture. 221g of 20% ammonia water was added to the mixture at 70°C within 1 hour. Then 545g of 47% ammonium phthalate solution (theoretical yield of disodium phthalate based on 90% conversion) was produced. In order to prevent crystallization of ammonium phthalate, the solution is stored at a temperature higher than 55°C. |
