Henry's Law Constant2.11 at 30 °C (headspace-GC, Sanz et al., 1997)
(IARC) carcinogen classification 3 (Vol. 41, Sup 7, 71) 1999
EPA chemical substance information information provided by: ofmpeb.epa.gov (external link)
Application pentachloroethane is a good polar solvent, detergent, ore flotation agent, Wood desiccant, also used in the manufacture of tetrachloroethylene (Anthelmintics), hexachloroethane (veterinary anthelmintics) and so on.
used as solvent, also used in organic synthesis
production method is derived from trichloroethylene via chloride addition. The trichloroethylene was added into the chlorination pot, and under the irradiation of fluorescent lamp, the chlorine reaction was slowly opened at 30-40 ℃, and the chlorine was opened to the relative density of 1.680-1.684(20 ℃). The excess chlorine gas was removed with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and urea to obtain pentachloroethane. The yield was 94%. This product can also be obtained by chlorination of tetrachloroethane under ultraviolet light irradiation.
