Due to the strong electron-withdrawing nature of the CF3 group, the carbonyl group containing CF3 is vulnerable to the attack of nucleophiles, which is the characteristic of the reactivity of hexafluoroacetone. Hexafluoroacetone easily reacts with water to form acidic gemediol (CF3)2(OH)2. Reacts with fatty alcohols to produce hemiketal. Reacts with hydrogen fluoride to produce perfluoropropanol. Reacts with metal fluorides to produce stable (CF3)2CFO-anions. Hexafluoroacetone cannot be homopolymerized, but it can be copolymerized with olefins and alkylene oxide.
