Use dinonyl carbonyl iron is widely used in tropane, monoketone and its analogs, cyclopentanone, cyclopentenone, synthesis of cycloheptenone, benzocyclobutene and trimethylene methane.

A 1-liter three-necked flask equipped with a stirrer, a gas inlet tube and a Mercury bubbler was placed in a 5-liter silver-plated Dewar and cooled with running water, after flushing with nitrogen, 100 (146G, 0.746 mol) of penta-valent iron and 200 of ice vinegar were added and then irradiated with a 125W high-pressure mercury lamp.
