Physical and Chemical Properties | Zinc sulfite white crystalline powder. Can absorb oxygen from the air, is oxidized to zinc sulfate. When heated to 100 °c, the water of crystallization was lost and became anhydrous salt. It is decomposed into zinc oxide and sulfur dioxide at 200 °c. Slightly soluble in cold water and ethanol, decomposition in hot water, can be dissolved in sulfite or ammonium salt solution. |
Risk Codes | 36/37/38 - Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. |
Safety Description | S26 - In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. S36/37/39 - Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection. |

Application | Zinc sulfite is obtained by the interaction of zinc hydroxide and sulfurous acid solution, and is used as an anatomical specimen or a medicinal preservative. |
acid decomposition | solid ZnSO3 is easily decomposed by acid such as sulfuric acid, using this property, ZnSO3 obtained by absorbing SO2 in ZnO suspension is decomposed by adding acid to recover SO2 and ZnSO4, which is another feasible way for comprehensive utilization of ZnO desulfurization products. In the zinc hydrometallurgy enterprise, the electrolytic waste liquid containing sulfuric acid up to 100gL can be used to decompose zinc sulfite acid, and the decomposed ZnSO4 solution can be sent to electrolytic zinc after purification; the high concentration SO2 obtained by decomposition can be sent to the acid production system for acid production or directly liquefied to liquid SO2. The total concentration increases rapidly, while SO2 is slightly soluble in water, and only 11.5 g100gH2O at 20 °c, so more and more SO2 will escape from the liquid phase; When the pH value is> 4.7, the amount of dissolved ZnSO3 is significantly reduced. |
