Descriptions | Methylene blue, also known as methyl blue, crystal violet, or basic fuchsine,is a chemical compound with the formula C16H18N3S·Cl. It is a thiazine dye used widely as a dye, biological stain, and indicator in chemical reactions. The solution of methylene blue in water is blue in oxidizing environments, but it becomes colorless when exposed to reducing agents such as zinc or ammonia. Therefore, it is considered an oxidation-reduction indicator. In the medical field, methylene blue is used to treat high-oxygen hemoglobin血症 caused by substances such as cyanide, aniline, nitrobenzene, nitrite, chlorate, quinone, hydroquinone, indigo, sulfonic acid, and benzidine. Methylene blue acts as an oxidant in high doses and concentrations, directly oxidizing hemoglobin to methemoglobin. In low doses and low concentrations, it acts as a reducing agent, reducing methemoglobin to hemoglobin under the action of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) dehydrogenase. It should be noted that methylene blue is different frommethyl blue(a weak acidic dye)and methyl violet(also known as gentian violet, a pH indicator)。 Additionally, methylene blue is listed as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) due to its potential to cause cancer in laboratory animals. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using it, and medical advice should be followed. |
