1.1-Phenyl-2-propanone (1-phenyl-2-propanone) and paraformaldehyde (dimethylaldehyde) are heated to react together to obtain a methyl hydrogen compound.
2. The methyl hydrogen compound is reacted with HCl in acetic anhydride acetic acid solution to generate the product.
