4-Chlorophenyl isothiocyanate is commonly used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It can react with amino acids, amines, alcohols and other compounds to form cystine, isothiocyanate, thiocyanate and other compounds. Because of its strong pungent odor, it can be used as an odor marker.
