| Application | Methyl 3-bromopropionic acid is a pharmaceutical intermediate, which can be obtained by bromination of methyl propionic acid and NBS. There are reports that it can be used to prepare a class of compounds for repairing cartilage. |
| preparation | combine methyl propionate (52ml,0.583mol) and recrystallized N-bromosuccinimide (120g,0.674mol) in 1,700ml of acetone in nitrogen atmosphere. The solution was treated with pure silver nitrate (9.9g,0.0583mol) in a single tank, and the reaction system was stirred at RT for 6 hours. Remove acetone (25 ℃, bath temperature) under reduced pressure to obtain gray slurry. Wash the slurry with 2x200ml hexane, remove the gray solid by filtration, and concentrate the filtrate in vacuum to obtain 95g of light yellow oily residue. By short-path vacuum distillation (65°C, about 25mm Hg) of the crude substance into a dry ice/acetone cooled receiver, 83.7g(88%) 3-bromopropionic acid methyl ester, which is a pale yellow oil. |
