2-(Methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5N3S. It is a white crystalline solid, soluble in some organic solvents such as ethanol and dimethylformamide.
2-(Methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile has some applications in the field of medicinal chemistry. It can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of fluorescent dyes and bioactive molecules, and also as a building block for drug molecules. Other applications include as pesticides and dye intermediates.
There are two main methods of preparing 2-(Methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile. One is the reaction of 2-methylthiopyrimidine with bromoacetonitrile to give the corresponding nitrile compound. The other is the reaction of 2-methylthiopyrimidine with sodium trichlorocyanide, and further reaction with a methylating reagent to obtain the target product.
