526-99-8 - Introduction
Galactose is oxidized by nitric acid to produce galactodisic acid, usually called mucic acid. Solubility in water: 3g/l (14 C), insoluble in alcohol and ether. The solubility of mucous acid is small, and crystals are precipitated in water. Therefore, D-galactose and nitric acid are often reacted to check the presence of galactose or lactose. Mucous acid is a racemate and has no optical rotation.
