Physical and Chemical PropertiesChemical properties of yellow crystalline powder, soluble in methanol, ethanol, DMSO and other organic solvents, derived from gardenia, saffron, Iridaceae saffron stigma, saffron.
UseUses Crocin acid has the effects of anti-tumor, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-hypertension and treatment of hemorrhagic shock, anti-oxidation, liver protection and gallbladder promotion.
In vitro study Transcrocetin (trans-Crocetin), a saffron metabolite originating from the crocin apocarotenoids, has been shown to exert strong NMDA receptor affinity and is thought to be responsible for the CNS activity of saffron.To ensure unchanged viability of Caco-2 cells throughout the transport experiments, cellular mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity of Caco-2 cells is measured by MTT assay after a 24 h incubation period with the test compounds: Hydroalcoholic saffron extract saffron extract (SE, 0.5-1 mg/mL) and crocin-1 (250-1000 µM) reveal no negative significant changes in cellular viability. Transcrocetin at 10 µM level does not change viability while higher concentrations (40-160 µM) reduces significantly cellular viability.

Fanhong [flower] acid is also known as saffron acid. Crocin acid is a kind of water-soluble carotenoid that coexists in saffron and gardenia, which is rare in nature. It is the main component of saffron. It has the functions of anti-cancer, tumor inhibition, blood lipid reduction, liver protection, quenching free radicals, anti-oxidation, etc. In addition, it also has the advantages of good water solubility, strong coloring power, stable to light, bright golden yellow in the range of pH = 1~4, once the coloring is very stable, etc, it is widely used in the fields of medicine and food.
