It is extremely easy to oxidize in the air. It can be oxidized to cystine by air in neutral or slightly alkaline solution, which is more stable in acidic solution. Soluble in water, ethanol, acetic acid and ammonia, insoluble in ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene, carbon disulfide and carbon tetrachloride.
