thymol, phthalic anhydride and anhydrous zinc chloride were mixed and heated. Diethyl ether and benzene were added. The mixture was heated to reflux on a water bath, the upper solvent was decanted, and methanol was added to the solid and heated. The remaining solid matter was extracted with methanol, precipitated by the dropwise addition of water and cooled to obtain pure thymol phthalein.

Thylphenolphthalein is an acid-base indicator, colorless under acidic conditions and dark blue under alkaline conditions. Its acidic form retains hydrogen on each hydroxyl group. It is suitable for preparing invisible inks.
