Use | Zirconium tetrachloride is a weak Lewis acid that can form adduct ZrCl4 · PCl5 and ZrCl4 · 2 PCl5 with phosphorus pentachloride, or form hexachlorozirconate with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride. In addition, it can also replace aluminum trichloride in the Friedel-Crafts reaction and Diels-Alder reaction. Zirconium tetrachloride is the most important precursor for chemical vapor deposition of zirconium dioxide and zirconium diboride. It is also used as a textile waterproofing agent, leather tanning agent, and analytical reagent. |

(T-4)-Zirconiumchloride - Upstream Downstream Industry
(T-4)-Zirconiumchloride - Introduction
Zirconium tetrachloride(Zirconium tetrachloride) is an important inorganic compound, the chemical formula is ZrCl4. The following is a description of the nature, use, preparation and safety information of Zirconium tetrachloride:
Nature:
1. Appearance: Zirconium tetrachloride is a colorless to light yellow volatile solid.
2. Solubility: Soluble in organic solvents such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, benzene, six chlorinated carbon, also soluble in hydrogen chloride and ammonium chloride. Slow hydrolysis in water produces zirconium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride.
Use:
1. Catalyst: Zirconium tetrachloride can be used as catalysts in organic synthesis, such as catalysts for olefin polymerization and dehydration reactions.
2. Electronics industry: Zirconium tetrachloride can be used to prepare high-purity semiconductor materials.
3. Metal coating: Zirconium tetrachloride can be used as a precursor for metal coating to improve the corrosion resistance and wear properties of metal surfaces.
Preparation Method:
The preparation of Zirconium tetrachloride can be obtained by reacting zirconium, zirconium ore or zirconium oxide with hydrogen chloride:
Zr(s) 2HCl(g) → ZrCl4(g) H2(g)
Safety Information:
1. Zirconium tetrachloride is irritating and corrosive, contact with skin and eyes should be washed immediately with plenty of water.
2. Avoid inhaling dust from Zirconium tetrachloride and wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment.
3. when operating Zirconium tetrachloride should comply with good laboratory practices, use should wear laboratory safety facilities, such as gloves, goggles and laboratory exhaust system.
4. Zirconium tetrachloride should be stored in sealed containers, away from fire and flammable substances.
