Physical and Chemical Properties | Dark purple crystals or crystalline fine powders with metallic luster. One of the oxidation products of carotenoids contained in citrus. The melting point was 136-140 °c. Insoluble in water, can be dispersed in hot water. Soluble in chloroform, insoluble in ethanol. Slightly soluble in vegetable oil, acetone. Soluble in oil or organic solvents in industrial products, stable performance. Or orange to red powder or granules that are dispersible in water. The crystal is unstable to oxygen and light and needs to be stored in a light shielding container filled with inert gas. Physiologically has the role of provitamin A, per gram equivalent to 120,000 international units of vitamin A activity. Natural products are found in citrus peel (0.9-3.4mg/kg), orange juice (0.005-0.02mg/kg), etc. |
Use | Natural carotenoids, which are produced in vivo with β-carotene, can induce cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) in mouse receptor responses. |

content analysis | all operations are performed in low glassware and soft light. Sample solution A accurately weigh about 40mg of sample, transfer it into a 100ml volumetric flask, dissolve in 10ml acid-free chloroform, fix the volume with cyclohexane, and mix well. Suction of 2ml to 50ml volumetric flask of this solution, and then use cyclohexane to fix the volume and mix well. Sample liquid B absorbs 5ml of sample liquid A to 50ml volumetric flask, uses cyclohexane to fix the volume and mix evenly. The absorbance of sample liquid B in 1CiTI absorption cell was measured with an appropriate spectrophotometer at a maximum absorption wavelength of about 460nm, and cyclohexane was used as the blank test solution. According to formula 25000A/264, calculate the content (in mg) of this product (C30H40O) in the sample, where A is the absorbance of the solution and 264 is the absorbance coefficient of pure β-apohumin aldehyde. |
toxicity | ADI 0~5mg // kg(FAO/WHO,2001). |
usage limit | FAO/WHO,1984(mg/kg): edible oil, margarine, etc., GMP; Jam, jelly, instant broth, soup, 200 (used alone or in combination with β-carotene); Cold drink 100 (total pigment of final product 300). FDA § 73.90:15mg/456g(2000). |
use | eat orange to yellow-red pigment. Can be used for ice cream, edible fat, margarine, candied fruit, jam, jelly, broth or soup. In addition to single use, it can be combined with β-carotene, methyl ester and ethyl ester of β-apo-8'-carotene acid (added to an easy-to-eat base). Natural carotenoids, produced in vivo with β-carotene, can induce cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) in mouse receptor response. |
Production method | It is obtained by oxidizing β-carotene with potassium permanganate. |
