In vitro study | Arctiin induces growth inhibition and dephosphorylation of the tumor suppressor rb protein (retinoblastoma protein) in human immortalized keratinocytes HaCaT. Arctiin inhibits cell growth by down-regulating cyclin D1 protein levels. arctiin-induced inhibition of cyclin D1 protein expression exists in a variety of human tumor cells, including osteosarcoma, lung cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, melanoma, transformed renal cells and prostate cancer. |
In vivo study | Arctiin has anticancer activity in animal models. In the two-stage carcinogenic test of mouse skin tumor model, it has significant anti-tumor effect. At the tumor-promoting stage, Arctiin has a protective effect against PhIP-induced carcinogenesis, especially in the mammary gland. Arctiin was shown to be effective orally in both IFV-inoculated normal mice and 5-FU-treated mice. |
