urine black acid, I .e., 2, 5-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid. Urinary acanthuria is abundant in the urine of patients. This urine can become black when contained in air, which is due to the dark black product produced by the natural oxidation of urinary black acid. Urinary black acid is an intermediate metabolite of phenylalanine and tyrosine and is broken down by urinary black acid oxygenase. Urinary acuria is caused by a congenital deficiency of this enzyme.
