5-cyano-2-methylpyriridine is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H6N2. The following is a description of its nature, use, preparation and safety information:

Nature:
5-cyano-2-methylpyrridine is an organic compound with pyridine structure, which is colorless to light yellow liquid in appearance. It has a melting point of -29°C and a boiling point of 184-185°C. Its solubility is good, can be dissolved in a variety of organic solvents.

Use:
5-Cyano-2-methylpyridine is widely used in organic synthesis. It is often used as a catalyst and intermediate in organic reactions. It participates in the chemical transformation of functional groups such as aniline, aldehydes and ketones, and is used in the preparation of pyridine derivatives, heterocyclic compounds and biologically active compounds.

Method:
There are many preparation methods for 5-cyano-2-methylpyrridine, such:
1.2-methyl pyridine reacts with Cyanogen bromide to generate 2-methyl -5-bromopyridine, and then reacts with copper tetrachloride to generate 2-methyl -5-chloropyridine. Finally, it is reacted with hydrocyanic acid to obtain the target product 5-cyano-2-methylpyrridine.
2. Can also be carried out by the oxidation reaction of 2-methyl pyridine to obtain 2-methyl -5-hydroxyl pyridine, and then its reaction with sodium cyanide, and then get 5-cyano-2-methylpyrridine.
