5689-83-8 - Introduction
1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide (also known as 1,3, 2-dioxathiane-4-methyl -2,2-dioxide) is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula C4H6O3S.
Nature:
1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It has a low boiling point and melting point and can be volatilized at room temperature. It is compatible with many common organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. This compound has limited solubility in water.
Use:
1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide is often used in organic synthesis as an organic vulcanizing agent. It can be used to generate compounds containing thioether functional groups and act as a solvent, dehydrating agent and catalyst in the synthesis. In addition, it can also be used in industrial applications such as coatings, glues, and cosmetics.
Preparation Method:
Generally, 1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide is synthesized by slowly adding an excess of ethylacrolein in sulfuric acid. This reaction gives 4-methyl sulfate vinyl aldehyde, which is subsequently converted to 1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide by the buffering action of sulfuric acid.
Safety Information:
1,3,2-Dioxathiolane,4-methyl-, 2,2-dioxide is an irritant substance that may cause irritation when in contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles when in use. In addition, because it is volatile, it should be used in a well-ventilated place and away from open flames and heat sources. Seek immediate medical help if inhaled or ingested.
