BERYLLIUM SULFATE - Introduction
BERYLLIUM SULFATE is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BeSO4 and a molecular weight of 105.07g/mol. It is a colorless crystalline solid, insoluble in water at room temperature, but soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. Beryllium sulfate is highly toxic and corrosive.
Beryllium sulfate is mainly used as an experimental reagent and catalyst in the laboratory. It is often used as a catalyst in organic synthesis reactions, such as the synthesis of polyethylene glycol and synthetic fatty acids. In addition, beryllium sulfate can also be used as a raw material for the fine chemical and electronic industries.
A common method for preparing beryllium sulfate is to react beryllium hydroxide with sulfuric acid. First, under stirring, beryllium hydroxide is dissolved in a small amount of concentrated sulfuric acid, and then a large amount of concentrated sulfuric acid is slowly added. The exothermic reaction will produce beryllium sulfate precipitation. Finally, the precipitate of beryllium sulfate was collected by filtration and washing.
Be extra careful when handling beryllium sulfate because it is highly toxic and highly corrosive. Contact with beryllium sulfate may cause serious eye, skin and respiratory damage. When using beryllium sulfate, you should wear appropriate protective gloves, glasses and masks to protect yourself. When working with beryllium sulfate, be sure to operate in a well-ventilated area and try to avoid inhaling its vapor or dust. Any splashes of beryllium sulfate into the eyes or skin should be rinsed immediately with plenty of water and treated promptly with medical attention.
