Compound (I) is acylated with o-chlorobenzoyl chloride to obtain compound (II). Then refluxed with phosphorus oxychloride to obtain a mixture of compound (III) and compound (IV). The mixture is in the presence of sodium methoxide. Refluxed in methanol, all converted to compound (V). Then in dichloromethane, it is brominated in reflux to obtain metazepam.
