introduction | 4-heptyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl is a liquid crystal material (liquid crystal materials, referred to as LCD). Liquid crystal material is a new type of high-performance special material developed in the 1970s. Its mesogenic phase is an intermediate phase state between solid three-dimensional ordered and liquid irregular. It is an oriented ordered fluid. |
application field | biphenyl liquid crystal has the advantages of good optical and chemical stability, adjustable physical constants such as anisotropy, viscosity and birefringence, etc. It is one of the widely used liquid crystal materials in modern electronic industry. Among the widely used biphenyl liquid crystal materials, 4-cyanodiphenyl and 4-cyanoterphenyl compounds account for a considerable proportion. |
preparation | under the protection of nitrogen, 20 mmol of 4-bromobenzonitrile, 0.2 mmol of palladium acetate, 0.24 mmol of Ph3P and 3 mmol of zinc bromide are dissolved in 30 ml of THF, then 50ml of Grignard reagent prepared from 20 mmol of 4-n-heptyl bromobenzene is added dropwise, reaction at room temperature for 2 hours. After that, the reaction solution is cooled in an ice water bath, and then 50 ml of dilute brine solution with a mass of 1% is dripped. After the dripping is completed, it is stirred for 30 minutes to separate the organic phase. The aqueous phase is extracted twice with 50 ml of ethyl acetate, and the organic phase is combined. After washing twice with 50 ml of water, the crude product is obtained by evaporating the solvent in a rotary evaporator. The crude product was recrystallized with methanol and decolorized with activated carbon to obtain pure 4-heptyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl. Yield: 68.2%. |
