Physical and Chemical Properties | Bioactive DiI (DiIC18(3)) is a lipophilic membrane dye. DiI has very weak fluorescence before entering the cell membrane, and can only be excited to have strong fluorescence after entering the cell membrane. DiI can emit orange-red fluorescence after being excited, with a maximum excitation wavelength of 549 nm and a maximum emission wavelength of 565 nm. Usually used as a long-term tracer for neurons and other cells. |

Once bound to a membrane it diffuses laterally in 2 dimensions; if there is no diffusion barrier, DiI generally stains the whole leaflet (one surface) of a biological membrane rapidly, but does not readily flip across to the other leaflet.
