Dihydroxypropyltetramethyldisiloxane - Introduction
1,3-bis (hydroxypropyl) tetramethyldisilane is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C12H30O2Si2.
Nature:
1,3-bis (hydroxypropyl)tetramethyl disiloxane is a colorless to pale yellow liquid. It has low toxicity and low volatility, insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and xylene.
Use:
This compound is mainly used as an adhesive or sealant. Due to its high stability and chemical inertness, it is often used for sealing and bonding medical devices, optical devices, electronic components and aerospace equipment. It can also be used for the modification of paints, dyes, plastics, textiles and adhesives.
Method:
The general preparation of 1,3-bis (hydroxypropyl)tetramethyl disiloxane can be carried out by a Silylation reaction. The main reaction step is the reaction of 1,3-bis (3-bromopropyl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane with sodium hydroxide in an alcohol solvent, 1,3-bis (hydroxypropyl) tetramethyldisilane is generated.
Safety Information:
1,3-bis (hydroxypropyl) tetramethyldisilane is relatively safe under normal conditions of use. However, it should avoid contact with strong oxidizers because it may burn or explode. During use, care should be taken to avoid inhaling gases, liquids or vapors, and to avoid contact with skin and eyes. If accidental contact, should immediately rinse with plenty of water, and seek medical treatment.
