| production method | 400g of 2, 4-dicyano-3-methylglutaramide and 1L of concentrated hydrochloric acid are dissolved in the solution with warm heat, dilute with 1L of water and reflux for 8H. The solution was saturated with sodium chloride and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was dried with phosphorus pentoxide and then the diethyl ether was distilled off to give 238-240g of crude 3-methylglutaric acid in 68% yield. The crude product can be recrystallized from 10% hydrochloric acid to obtain a pure product. |
