p-octylphenol ethoxylate is formed by polycondensation of octylphenol and ethylene oxide in the presence of a base catalyst. It is mainly used as liquid detergent, dye color improver or emulsifier in textile industry.

on December 17, 2012, the candidate list of the eighth batch of substances of high concern (SVHC) of REACH regulation published on the official website of the European Union Chemicals Administration (ECHA) added p-teroctylphenol ethoxylate [4-(1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethylbutyl ) phenol, ethoxylated], restricted the use of such substances in textiles and leather products, and required the mass fraction of such substances in articles. Many countries in the world have begun to conduct separate research and monitoring of these substances. The characteristics, application range and toxicity of p-teroctylphenol ethoxylates with different polymerization degrees are very different. In particular, short-chain p-octylphenol ethoxylates containing 1 to 3 ethoxy units are intermediate products that are difficult to further degrade due to the natural degradation of such polymers in textiles and the environment, and have greater ecotoxicity than the parent. Therefore, it is very necessary to establish a method that can simultaneously separate p-teroctylphenol ethoxylates with different polymerization degrees, especially the detection method of this kind of short-chain p-teroctylphenol ethoxylates, which will provide a strong guarantee for the ecological safety of textiles and the smooth export of textiles in China.
