Tylosin phosphate is a macrolide antibiotic found naturally as a fermentation product of Streptomyces fradiae. Tylosin tartrate exerts potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Tylosin phosphate is widely used as a feed additive for promoting animal growth. Tylosin phosphate is used for veterinary purposes against bacterial dysentery and respiratory diseases in poultry, pigs and cattle. Tylosin phosphate exerts antibacterial effects by binding to 23S rRNA of the bacterial ribosomal 50S subunit [1]. Tylosin phosphate also prevents growth of Gram-negative strains, with MICs of 64 μg/mL, 32 μg/mL, 512 μg/mL and 1 μg/mL for M. haemolytica 11935, P. multocida 4407, E. coli ATCC 25922 and E. coli AS19rlmAI, respectively[3]. Tylosin phosphate (10-500 mg/kg s.c.) generally suppresses the elevated TNF-α and IL-1β levels and increases the IL-10 levels in the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -treated animals[4].
