-Usually by reacting 2-methylpentanoic acid with butyl lithium to generate the corresponding lithium salt
-The lithium salt reacts with copper hypochlorite to produce 3,5-dimethylhexanoic acid
-Finally, crystallize 3,5-dimethylhexanoic acid to obtain pure 3,5-dimethylhexanoic acid
