白色结晶粉末,稍有硫化合物的特殊臭气,味微甜。易溶于水、稀酸和稀碱,难溶于乙醇、乙醚等有机溶剂。1%的水溶液pH值为5.6~6.1。对热及空气稳定,对强酸不稳定。
以丙烯醛为原料合成制得。
用作饲料的营养强化剂,可以弥补氨基酸平衡。畜禽缺乏蛋氨酸,会引起发育不良、体重减轻、肝肾机能减弱、肌肉萎缩、皮毛变质等。饲料中添加1kg蛋氨酸,相当于50kg鱼粉的营养价值。一般添加量为0.05%~0.2%。
肝昏迷忌用。遮光,密闭保存。
