以巴豆酸或以甘氨酸为原料制得。也可以葡萄糖或淀粉为原料,经由大肠杆菌、黄色短杆菌、谷氨酸杆菌或钝齿棒杆菌为菌种经发酵精制得产品。
作饲料营养强化剂,芬氨酸是一种必需的氨基酸。苏氨酸常添加到未成年仔猪和家禽的饲料中,是猪饲料的第二限制氨基酸和家禽饲料的第三限制氨基酸。添加于以小麦,大麦等谷物为主的饲料中。
